Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona
July 2003

Traveled by RV with two others, Ira & Vi, also in their RVs, to visit Colorado and a little of NM and AZ. Highlights of trip were a visit to Capulin Volcano National Monument in northeast New Mexico, which is a cinder cone of a volcano which erupted about 60,000 years ago, and it is now extinct. A 1 mile road winds around the cone to the summit where there is a parking area and lookout. Visited the historic town of Trinidad, Colorado and camped at Trinidad Lake State Park. Next we saw the Great Sand Dunes, tallest dunes in N. America at 700 feet, pushed by winds until the Sangre de Christo Mountains barred their way, quite a spectacular sight and still being reshaped. In Salida we camped right on the Arkansas River and could watch rafters and kayakers going by. Next stop was Buena Vista, where we rented a jeep and took a 6 hour drive, over Cottonwood Pass, which is 12,120 feet and ending the drive at Taylor reservoir, and we took a day trip to Leadville, highest incorporated city in U.S. Never gets very hot there!! Visited Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Crested Butte, Ouray and Silverton and an abandoned mining town Animas Fork where a few old cabins are all that remained. Near Cortez, CO is Mesa Verde, where about 4,000 of the Acestral Puebloan people lived between 600 and 1800 AD. The Cliff Palace, the largest, has 150 rooms and 23 kivas. Mancos is a small western type town offering stagecoage rides among other things, and a combination RV park/ranch resort. Pagosa Springs, where we again had riverside campsites, offers riverside camping, and lots of sightseeing. Visited Painted Desert and Petrified Forest which are adjacent to each other, close to the town of Holbrook, AZ.
